Africa travel FAQ

Questions about planning a safari

Who is African Travel, Inc.?

African Travel, Inc. is a luxury safari company that has specialized in Africa for more than 50 years and is part of The Travel Corporation family of brands. Sandpiper Vacations books directly with African Travel, so you get our planning and their team on the ground.

When is the best time to go on safari?

It depends on where you go. In much of East and Southern Africa, the drier months from about June to October bring some of the best game viewing, and the Great Migration usually reaches Kenya's Masai Mara in the second half of the year. Greener months can mean fewer crowds and better rates. We will help you pick the right time for what you want to see.

How far ahead should I book an African safari?

Nine to twelve months ahead is a good goal, and earlier for peak season, the Great Migration and gorilla trekking permits, which are limited.

Is a safari a good trip for kids?

Yes, with the right planning. Many lodges welcome families, though some set minimum ages for game drives or walking safaris. We choose family friendly camps and a pace that works for everyone.

Can I add Egypt, Morocco or a beach to my safari?

Absolutely. Many travelers add a Nile cruise in Egypt or a few beach days in Zanzibar, the Seychelles or Mauritius. We plan the flights between them so the whole trip connects.

Do I need vaccines or a visa?

Requirements depend on the countries you visit and can change. We share the current entry requirements for your trip and recommend seeing a travel clinic about vaccines and health advice well before you go.

How much does an African safari cost?

It depends on the season, the lodges, the length of the trip and whether you travel privately or in a small group. Tell us your budget and we will show you options that fit it.
